MEDITERRANEAN FRIDAYS II: HOUSE IN AZEITAO

This is one of those fantastic houses you can't forget after having seeing it. Designed by the Portuguese team of architects Aires Mateus, it was remodeled in Azeitao, Portugal, in 2003. It was a wharehouse for wine and therefore it has the conventional unique room topped by a gabled roof. The project, while fully respecting the pre-existence, frees the central space turning it into a big living-dining room. The service areas- kitchen, bathrooms, cupboards and stairs- are located hidden along the perimeter. The night area is distributed in boxes that seem to float on the living-room.

The space created with this metaphorical gesture is amazing. A unique way of reconverting a building on something completely different from its original use, but preserving at the same time the essence of what it once was.

Ésta es una de esas maravillosas casas que no puedes olvidar una vez que la has visto. Diseñada por el equipo de arquitectos portugueses Aires Mateus, fue reformada en Azeitao, Portugal, en 2003. Anteriormente era un almacén de vino y por lo tanto tenía la típica morfología de estancia única y tejado a dos aguas. El proyecto, respetando al máximo la preexistencia, libera el espacio central convirtiéndolo en un gran salón-comedor. Los espacios de servicio- cocina, aseos, almacenamiento y escaleras- se sitúan ocultos en el perímetro, reforzando el ya de por sí grueso muro exterior. La zona de noche por su parte se distribuye en forma de cajas que parecen flotar sobre el salón.

El espacio que se crea con este metafórico gesto es increíble. Una forma única de reconvertir un edificio en algo completamente diferente de su uso original, pero manteniendo a su vez la esencia de lo que allí un día hubo.
