MEDITERRANEAN FRIDAYS XXI: A RENOVATION IN WHITE, WOOD AND STONE BY MANUEL AIRES MATEUS

Manuel Aires Mateus, one of the two brothers and founders of the award-winning Portuguese studio- of which we already talked in Mediterranean Fridays-, signs the renovation of this house in Lisbon. It consists of two parts: the restored old construction that now accomodates the day area and the added new volume, which contains the night area, that is, the bedrooms and their corresponding bathrooms.

As usual in this wonderful studio's projects, white colour and minimalism define the whole space. What calls particularly my attention is how furniture and decorations are placed. From my point of view it is a way of highlighting the extraodinary stone flooring which comes from the original building.

To me, a part of the house of outstanding beauty is the living and dinning-room where space linking has been used in a masterful way, creating a feeling of walls overlaping to infinity. Simple and elegant as always, Aires Mateus work gets to reproduce faithfully Mies and minimalism's motto "less is more".
