A JAPANESE HOUSE IN AMSTERDAM

This minimalistic renovation of a duplex in Amsterdam is a work of the Japanese studio MAMM DESIGN. Japanese architecture is, together with the Nordic one, the one which works the most on abstraction of forms and elimination of unnecessary decorations, and this house is a clear example of that. Two key parts can be found on the design: on the one hand, the staircase that connects every floor, programmatically and visually as well, and that contributes in a decisive way with all house's natural illumination; and on the other hand the white box, which contains the kitchen and the bathrooms and that, taking advantage of the pre-existing facilities, arranges the space around it in a fantastic unique way.

Esta minimalista reforma de un dúplex en Ámsterdam es obra del estudio japonés MAMM DESIGN. La arquitectura japonesa es junto a la arquitectura nórdica la que más trabaja en la abstracción de formas y eliminación de ornamentos innecesarios, y esta vivienda es un claro ejemplo de ello. Podemos encontrar dos partes claves en el proyecto: por un lado, la escalera que conecta todas las plantas, programática y visualmente, y que contribuye de forma decisiva a la iluminación natural de toda la casa; y por otro la caja que contiene la cocina y los cuartos de baños y que, aprovechando las instalaciones preexistentes, distribuye el espacio de una forma única.
